Watch and Pray
“Watch and pray,
that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but
the flesh is weak.”
Matt 26:41
In the final moments of our Lord on earth, he went to the
garden of
Gethsemane to pray. He went
with the eleven, and then took Peter, James and John a bit forward, left them
there and went forward to pray. On two occasions, he came back to meet them
sleeping. At the third time, He had to tell them those historic words inverse 41 of Matthew 26.
Perhaps we may find it had to understand
how at such a crucial time, a time when the Lord was prophesying his suffering
and death, these disciples could afford to sleep.. Could it be that they had
heard him speak on these matter for long, they had started to take him for
granted? We are at liberty to think freely about it. Yet an honest look at
ourselves will reveal so much to keep us quiet.
At there times when we should be at a
prayer meeting or a bible study, but were asleep? At there times when we felt the nudging of
the Holy Spirit to do some thing in particular and yet we ignored Him? Or a time
when we knew we should be visiting a brother or sister for one reason or the
other, and we did not?
In the case of the disciples, they sleep
because of sorrow (Luke 22:43-46) and we could too because our bodies are weak.
We could fail because our emotions are overstretched and we are frustrated. We
could also fail because we have started taking him for granted. In fact we could
fail for many reasons.
It is precisely because of these that we
should equally heed our Lord’s warning to the disciples, to watch and pray. for
if we don’t, we would fail over and over again.
If for any reason you have failed him and
you are Godly sorry for it, go back to the God of new opportunities for
forgiveness and restoration. Besides seek and receive his grace to continue to
stand.
“Now unto him that is able to keep you
from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with
exceeding joy, To the only wise God our Saviors, be glory and majesty, dominion
and power, both now and ever. Amen.” Jude 24-25
